American (Willow) Goldfinch  (Carduelis tristis)

Male is on the left and female on the right.

Common name --  Wild Canary. Enjoys Niger (thistle) seed all year long.

Pictured is a male dressed in his summer feathers. In winter his yellow feathers changes to olive yellow and resemble the female in color.

A small bird measuring only 4½ inches long.

The state bird of Indiana, New Jersey, and Washington.

A year round resident in Maryland.

House Finch  (Carpodacus mexicanus).

hHouse Finch

In the forefront is a mature male. To the right and left are young males changing their plumage to mature colors. In the back is a female.

Can be confused with the Purple Finch, the red on the crown, breast and rump is brighter then the wine color of the purple finch.

Likes the black oil type of sunflower seeds all year long. Constant visitor at feeders.       

Common to the state of Maryland all year long.
