Junco, common name for three finch
species that are adept at cracking open seeds. Males are mantled with
black or sooty gray "ponchos" and their undersides are sharply defined. White
outer tail feathers usually show in flight. Their bills are pink and their eyes are brown.
Females are similar, but they are sooty and their ponchos are not defined.
